Jaggery is typically made from sugarcane. Unlike white refined sugar, when jaggery is made, the highly nutritious by-product called mollasses is not extracted. Jaggery is mineral-rich, especially iron. It is also said to purify the blood and strengthen both the digestive and nervous systems.

When I need to buy running shoes, I google ‘best running shoes’. I compare prices and then see who stocks my size (my feet are tiny so that’s a real problem). I then make a quick call, pay online and hope for the best! I don’t understand all the jargon and my philosophy has always been, “Well if they’re not right this time, I’ll change brand next time!”

The word ‘quit’ means to stop doing something. And yes, we stopped. We stopped trying to summit Königstein. Quitting conjures up negative connotations in my mind. But the decision that was made was not negative. It felt right. It was easy.

It’s not so much the written book, but rather the memories and feelings that this book invokes when I cook from it or refer to it. Personally, it represents the start of an ongoing journey. It reminds me of the joy of simple evenings, a crammed kitchen, nourishing food, shared interests and conversation.

It sounds trivial - why make such a big thing about drinking celery juice for 40 days? But therein lies the crux. We constantly make promises to ourselves; only to be broken. Breaking promises to ourselves erodes our confidence and self-trust. So start making promises to yourself that you intend keeping and set yourself up for success.

The circular Brandberg (“Burning Mountain”) Complex is about 350km NW of Windhoek. It rises up from the surrounding desert plains and is crowned by Namibia’s highest point, the 2,573m Königstein. The mountain has an approximate circumference of 140km.

Roasted Tomato Sauce

I’ve been making this tomato sauce for years. I devised the recipe myself. At the time of it’s invention, my goal was to produce a tomato sauce that did not need any sautéing or sideline prep. I wanted to be able to make it with my eyes closed. When my kids were younger, they always requested “Mom’s tomato sauce”. It was the easiest meal ever. If I didn’t have a batch in the freezer, I could make it effortlessly in the afternoon - and then pour it over pasta for their evening meal.

Growing up, I cannot ever recall hearing the word ‘miso’, let alone eating it. I was introduced to miso in London in the late nineties. It was only whilst visiting Japan a few years later that I realised its dietary signficance. Good quality miso is a nutritious balance of natural carbohydrates, essential oils, minerals, vitamins, and protein of the highest quality.
Celery Goals

In the past few years I’ve had phases (especially during lockdown) where I’ve gulped down celery juice every morning. The concept was introduced to me by Anthony William, the Medical Medium (you guessed it). This blog post is not about telling you to drink celery juice, nor to discuss Anthony’s credibility. All I will say in this regard, is that I have tried it. And I felt good. Really good.
